Conflict

I think the main conflict in Where the Red Fern Grows is character VS. nature because they're always trying to catch a coon.  There is also some character VS. self because he had to push himself to get enough money for dogs.

I think the tone and mood in Warriors is edgy, and exciting.

  1. Good Evening Colton:

You read with great insight, and you are right on about the conflicts in Red Fern
Yes, The dogs and Billy have many conflicts with all types of nature. The house cat getting caught in his coon traps was so funny! What great writing.
Think about the different types of conflict with nature in Red Fern - What happened as the dogs grew? What was your favorite scene in Red Fern?
Rawls uses many similie - Write one for us and explain why Rawls uses to two items to compare?
Personifications are another device Rawls uses. Can you find one and explain how it adds to the story?

Why do you think it was important that Billy had to work for two years and save his money to buy the dogs. What did that tell us about Billy?

This is great -- Again Colton, I want to comment on your writing. You explain your points with examples that give power to your writing.

    Enjoy Thursday,
    Mrs. Albert

  2. While the dogs grew they got better at coon hunting and didn't hardly ever lose a coons trail while when they were little they could hardly follow a coon. My favorite scene was when they were hunting the ghost coon. Can you explain to me what a personification is ? It is important that Billy gets the money for himself because he wouldn't learn anything. That tells us that he is strong agressive and hardworking.
Can you give me tips on how to write a good sumary

  3. Good Evening Colton:

You have been writing good summaries for me and doing a nice job of giving me details, however, we can always improve our skills. I will send it to you e-mail as an attachment as it will be a step by step process.

Personification: Is giving human traits to inanimate objects.
    Example from Red Fern:
    1. “The wind itself seemed to be angry at the big tree’s stubborn resistance.”
Discussion: Does the wind have feelings. No - Authors use this to give emotion/tone/mood to their writings.
Red Fern has many similes and metaphors as well. Rawls uses Figurative Language(that is what simile, metaphors, personification etc. are called) that reflects the southern culture and universal feelings.

Yes, again you are right on! Billy needed to learn the value of work and delayed gratification - as we all do. This is a prime example of how Rawls displays universal ideals.

Colton; Have you decided on the book we all will read? I am so enjoying this. It is fun to share and read your writing.

    'til next time,
    Mrs. Albert
