In that sentence I can tell that Riverclan is involved because it's by a river. I can also tell that there is a lot of water. Another thing is that it's in the fall. The flat characters are the other warriors. the round character is Splashheart. He is brave, kind, respectful, tough, and generous.
Sunningsrock belonged to Riverclan but, then there was a big flood and the rock turned into an island and, wasn't on either side. Riverclan and Thundeclan were fighting to see who would get Sunningsrock.
During the battle, he pinned down a black and white cat but two cats pounced on him. Then Splashheart's leader jumped on the cats and died. Splashheart was very sad . He is brave because he saved his clanmate from a tomcat. He is very respectful to his elders because he made the code. The importance of the code is teaching generations to respect their elders.
Colton, grandma needs to read your book from Maure. I love that it teaches life's lesson. Honor your family and your parents is a great lesson to learn and this book seems like it is a fun way to learn.

ReplyDeleteGood Afternoon Colton:
ReplyDeleteHow interesting to read your comments about the character and setting of Code of the Clan. I believe you are right about Splashheart being a round character. The adjectives you chose builds an understanding of his personality, and how he dealt with the problems of territory.
Points about character to notice:
1. The author did not name the tom cats - they are not as important as Splashheart. Does this tell us that our names are used to identify us and the way we act? Something to think about.
2. Authors use Direct and Indirect methods to teach us about the characters.
Direct - is when a character speaks or thinks about him/herself.
Indirect - is when another character speaks or thinks about another character.
Assignment:
Can you find an example of where other characters are talking about Splashheart
Can you find an example where Splashheart is talking or thinking about himself?
I hope to hear from you soon.
Mrs. Albert
In this post let's talk about the need of the main characters to change. The main character in all well written novels MUST change. They can grow or regress physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially.
ReplyDeleteThink about the book "Hatchet". How many different ways did Brian change?
Physically. Undoubtedly he grew is size because he was there for several months, but he also loss weight because he went hungry until he learned how to survive obtain food in the forest.
Mentally, - oh goodness, Brian learned many things - how to fish, how to start a fire, how to deal with the animals and what about the way he felt about his mother?
Spiritually - Brian learned to respect and appreciate the beauties of nature.
Socially - Brian learned to handle situations with thoughts that lead to positive actions - a great lesson we all must learn.
Now think about Splashheart. What is his weakness? What is he learning? Perhaps by now you have already seen him change is some way. Please let me know, I want to see Splashheart grow too.
In the beginning Splashheart was happy and carefree, catching fish. Then during a battle, he almost died but, then his leader saved him and died. It was a life changing experience. He also talked to a dead cat Aspentail who taught him to always respect your elders. That fight made him braver because on the next fight he will know that Aspentail will be with him
ReplyDeleteEach chapter is a different story and has different characters so I don't know enough about Splashheart to tell what he thinks and what other people say about him.
Colton, this is really interesting. I need to read the book so I can understand it better! I like this code! Grandma A.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Colton:
ReplyDeleteWhat do you see as the common link between the different chapters? The point of view in the next chapter will be from other clans point of view.
Perhaps this is a good time to discuss the Element of Literature - Conflict: There are five basic types of conflict:
1. Character vs Character - an example of this conflict is when two individuals fight with words, ideas, or physically. You know - The gunfight scene - that is it.
2. Character vs nature - the book "Hatchet" is a prim example of character struggling against nature. Brian got sick eating the berries, the biting bugs, the darkness and the cold - all types of conflict with nature.
3. Character vs self - Remember when Brian had to force himself to keep moving in Hatchet. When individuals think one thing and do another it causes personal problems - thus conflict with self.
4. Character vs society - This is happening in the book you are now reading with the value of Loyalty. This Clan society gives their idea of what loyalty is and how members of their society need to respond to be loyal. What if one of the characters of the society has a different view - conflict will happen, not with just one party, but with a group.
5. character vs gods . The is NOT God with a capital. This type of conflict is what happens in the myths - Roman, Greek etc. Side note All societies have myths.
In most well written book the author weaves several types of conflict into the storyline.
Does this book concentrate on just one or two types of conflict? Which one? What does the main character do to resolute the conflicts?
Thank you Colton, Again, I enjoying reading your thoughts about what you read.
Your write in clear and concise. You state well the summary of the chapters, and with a broad vocabulary.
I like Grandma's idea of reading the same book. We could all read the same book and have quite a lively discussion. That sounds like fun to me. If you would like to read a book together, which one? I am sure your Grandma and I will enjoy this adventure. We will let you do the choosing.
Thank you Mrs. Albert.
The True Tale of a Teacher Who Learned to Type on a Manual Typewriter:
ReplyDeleteStudent Miss Wescott, later to be Mrs. Albert, loved to see the keys on her black Royal typewriter jump. First 40 words per minute, then 60 - oh watch those keys spring to life when she hits 80 words per minute. (I understood the workings of a manual typewriter)
About this time wizards in the mechanical world put electricity into typewriters. Now the fingers must not strike so solidly, but with more finesse and more quickness, and the speed was nothing short of miraculous -- one test even reached 101. Lightening Bolt Miss Wescott, later to be Mrs. Albert.(This is where my understanding of the workings of a typewriter stopped!)
Life yielded yet another advance - personal computers - with mind-warping speed, plus connections to the universe. Words such as e-mail, internet, and blogs were added to the dictionary with definitions, but not necessarily added to the minds and understanding of those who attempted to use them.
So the now Mrs. Albert joyously accepted the invitation of Colton Anderson to blog about books -- oh what a treat! However, her understanding of just how blogs work was caught between electricity and e-mails.
Everyday the now Mrs. Albert checked her email to see if Colton had answered her comments on his blog - no emails from Colton. Sad day. Then in a moment of pondering the whys of it all, a voice in her head informed her that blogs do not show on emails. Now that was a brilliant moment of discovery!! Really, Mrs. Albert... Really Colton, that is a true story.
Please know I have never followed a blog before, and for some strange reason, not a well founded one, but a reason nonetheless, I thought when you blogged I would get a e-mail saying I had a message.
Now I know I must open your blog...Computer are a humbling tool. Thank you for your patience. You see, Colton, we are all still learning.
See you tomorrow...
Mrs. Albert
It is a bright morning and you are in school. How have your State test gone?
ReplyDeleteAt your rate of reading I am sure you have finished Warriors - what next?
Colton - hang in there we can do this if it is fun for you. We have wrinkles to work out as both of us are on new turf.
I hope you had a good day at school.
Love
Mrs. Albert.
